"Baby Hassan was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at birth. A life-saving shunt surgery gave him a chance at a normal life."
Hassan was born with hydrocephalus, a condition where fluid builds up in the brain. Without treatment, the pressure would cause brain damage and eventually death.
His parents, refugees living in a camp in East Africa, had no access to neurosurgical care. When MolGen partnered with a local organization to provide surgical services at a nearby hospital, Hassan's case was prioritized.
Dr. Michael Osei, a neurosurgeon volunteering with MolGen, performed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery to drain the excess fluid. The procedure went smoothly, and Hassan began to improve immediately.

"Within days, you could see the difference," says Dr. Osei. "His head circumference stabilized, and he became more alert and responsive."
Hassan is now two years old and meeting his developmental milestones. His parents bring him for regular follow-up care through MolGen's telemedicine program, which connects them with specialists who monitor his progress.
"He's our miracle," says his mother, Amina. "The doctors saved his life, and we will never forget their kindness."
Outcome
Successful shunt placement. Hassan is developing normally with regular follow-up care.
