Kofi was just two years old when his parents noticed a large bulge in his groin that would come and go. Their local clinic diagnosed an inguinal hernia but couldn't perform the surgery needed to fix it.

"We were so worried," says his father, Emmanuel. "The doctors said if it got stuck, it could be very dangerous."

At a MolGen screening clinic in Accra, Kofi was identified as needing urgent surgical repair. The pediatric surgery team scheduled his operation for the following day.

The surgery, performed by Dr. Fatima Al-Hassan, took just 45 minutes. Kofi was playing again within a day.

"Pediatric hernias are common and very treatable, but without surgery, they can become life-threatening emergencies," explains Dr. Al-Hassan. "It's incredibly rewarding to provide this simple surgery that makes such a big difference."

Kofi's parents are grateful their son can now grow up healthy and strong. "We thank God for these doctors who came to help us," says Emmanuel. "Our son has his whole life ahead of him now."

Outcome

Successful hernia repair. Kofi is healthy and thriving.
